Shikanji (Indian Lemonade)

It’s July, and it’s hot out there, folks! Make 6-ingredient shikanji, a flavorful sweet-and-sour Indian lemonade, to cool off. Regular lemonade is good to beat the heat, but it lacks the depth that Indian spices give shikanji. There’s tang from kala namak (Indian black salt) and chaat masala (an Indian spice mix) that just can’t be replaced. You can also add some ground cumin or black pepper if you want earthier tones or more flavor, but I find the simple mix down below does the job just as well!

Ingredients

  • juice of 2 lemons

  • 4 cups water

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 tsp kala namak

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp chaat masala

  • ice cubes as needed

Directions

  • Add all ingredients to a large pitcher and mix. Taste and adjust the sweetness and tang according to your preference. Serve cold or with ice.

Notes

  • Chaat masala is a mix of certain spices commonly used in Indian cooking. If you don’t have it, try using a combination of black salt and your preferred spices. If you want to make the real thing, however, you can try this recipe by The Spruce Eats.
